Abstract. Hurricane Matthew (2016) was observed by the ground-based polarimetric Next Generation Weather Radar (NEXRAD) in Miami (KAMX) and National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration WP-3D (NOAA P-3) airborne tail Doppler radar near coast of southeastern United States for several hours, providing a novel opportunity to evaluate compare single- multiple-Doppler wind retrieval techniques tropical cyclone flows. The generalized velocity track display (GVTD) technique can retrieve subset field from single under assumption nearly axisymmetric rotational wind, but it has been shown have errors aliasing unresolved components. An improved that mitigates due storm motion is derived this study, although some spatial remains limited information content single-Doppler measurements. A spline-based variational called SAMURAI full three-dimensional fore–aft pseudo-dual-Doppler scanning, temporal nonsimultaneous comparison between two shows tangential winds are generally comparable techniques, GVTD improves accuracy retrieval.
